Spirit Airlines has been making itself into much less of a punitive low-cost carrier lately. Earlier this month, Spirit announced the end of change and cancellation fees (this was likely in response to Frontier doing it first). Now, it’s increasing the allowable weight limit for checked bags and extending the expiration date for travel vouchers.

Baggage

Spirit is increasing the weight allowed for checked bags by 25% with its latest move to shift standard baggage weight from 40 to 50 pounds. The industry standard for checked bags is 50 pounds, so this move aligns Spirit with American, Delta, Southwest, United, and others.

Spirit Voucher

When Spirit issued travel vouchers in the past, they were valid for only 90 days. This meant that you had to have plans to fly Spirit again pretty quickly after a voucher was issued. In another move that’s friendly towards customers, Spirit has just extended vouchers to be valid for one year from the date of issue (this is for vouchers that are issued after June 3rd).

Matt Klein, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Spirit Airlines, said:

Spirit has changed the game before and we’re doing it again with this first round of initiatives that will lead the way to a new era of low-fare, high-value flying. These enhancements provide each and every one of our Guests unparalleled flexibility and peace of mind, and it’s just the beginning of our pursuit to make affordable travel easier and more seamless than ever.”

Anthony’s Take: As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a fan of Spirit and fly the airline regularly. The BIG FRONT SEATS, my own power brick, and food I bring on board make it a great experience (along with the fact that the planes are usually clean, have fast Wi-Fi, and I get free snacks as a Gold member). These new changes make flying Spirit even more appealing.
