Spirit Airlines announced today that it’s adding service from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to both Belize City’s Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) and Grand Cayman’s Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) this winter. By the end of the year, Spirit will offer the most nonstop destinations ever at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) with service to more than 70 cities and up to 100 daily departures.
Flights to/from Belize City’s Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) will run 3x weekly on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays starting on November 21st. Service to/from Grand Cayman’s Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) begins on December 4th and runs 3x weekly as well on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Belize City offers access to the Belize Rainforest, Mayan temples, and the second-largest barrier reef in the world. In Grand Cayman, passengers can swim with stingrays (I’ve done this and it’s fun), snorkel or dive at coral reefs ,or relax on Seven Mile Beach. Spirit last flew to Grand Cayman’s Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) in 2008 (it’s been so long that I consider this route new).
John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, said:
With its world-class water excursions and beautiful landscapes, Belize is an incredible addition to our international service and growing Fort Lauderdale route map. We’re looking forward to offering our Belize Guests an elevated travel experience on their journey to the United States and giving our Fort Lauderdale Guests even more destinations to explore as we double down on our FLL service.
Grand Cayman is a dream destination, and we look forward to offering our Guests new, affordable travel options to reach this island paradise. This is a win for travelers across our network, who are gaining more access to top destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America as we continue to expand service from Fort Lauderdale.”
Spirit has made a lot of changes this year and I like the direction that it’s headed in terms of onboard product. The airline now has three booking options, including:
- Spirit First: What used to be known as the Big Front Seats® now offer a carry-on and first checked bag, no change or cancel fees, priority check-in and boarding, reserved overhead bin space, complimentary snacks and drinks (including alcoholic beverages), and free Wi-Fi.
- Premium Economy: Passengers are given a Premium Seat with extra legroom or a blocked middle seat. This includes one carry-on bag, no change or cancel fees, priority boarding, and reserved overhead bin space.
- Value: This is Spirit’s Economy Class ticket. Seat selection, one carry-on bag, checked bags, and other options can be purchased separately.
Anthony’s Take: I enjoy flying what is now known as Spirit First. A few weeks ago Spirit got me to my destination early when Delta and United were both delayed.
