Back in October, I wrote about Scandinavian Airlines’ (SAS) plans to exit Star Alliance and join SkyTeam. This was in part due to an investment from Air France-KLM. Now, a firm timeline for the transition has been established.
SAS will be exiting Star Alliance on August 31st. It’s one of the founding members of the world’s largest airline alliance and this is a loss for the other partners. SkyTeam is the world’s second largest airline alliance. It includes airlines like Delta, Air France-KLM, Korean Air, and Aeromexico (there are 19 airlines in total). SAS will not become a full member on September 1st, but will begin offering most SkyTeam benefits with many of the other airlines in the alliance as it works to become a full member and handles integration.
Today we announce the next steps in our alliance transition journey. SAS will remain in Star Alliance through 31 August, 2024, and the customers can start enjoying benefits with most SkyTeam airlines beginning 1 September, 2024. ▶️ https://t.co/pzLlKugpJ6 #flysas pic.twitter.com/gpFFBUIsOF

From September 1st and onwards:
- EuroBonus Silver members will enjoy benefits such as extra baggage allowance and priority check-in with most SkyTeam airlines.
- EuroBonus Gold and Diamond members will enjoy benefits such as lounge access, fast track and priority boarding with most SkyTeam airlines.
If you have a reservation before August 31st, you will still receive the same benefits from EuroBonus and those you are entitled to if you hold Star Alliance Silver or Gold status.
Anthony’s Take: I’m excited for SAS to make the jump to SkyTeam. Since I have been flying more Delta, I’m looking forward to have another airline in this alliance in the near future.
