I am a huge Star Wars fan and have written about how excited I was to fly United’s Star Wars aircraft a few years back. United repainted its aircraft some time ago and now ANA is about to say goodbye to its R2-D2™ livery.
ANA was the first airline to introduce Star Wars branded planes in 2015 and two of the three are still flying. If you find yourself on the airline, you might be lucky enough to fly on a plane branded with R2-D2 or C-3PO. It looks like BB-8 is no longer adorning an aircraft. A Boeing 777-200 is painted like C-3PO and a Boeing 787-9 is adorned in R2-D2’s likeness. After tomorrow, only C-3PO will remain in service.
R2-D2’s final trip will be between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) tomorrow (operating as flight NH 101, unless there is an aircraft swap).
Anthony’s Take: I’m sad to see R2-D2 repainted. I never had the chance to fly on any of ANA’s Star Wars planes. Maybe it’s time to find a route with C-3PO before he also meets his maker as that aircraft will be repainted in January 2026. May the Force be with you, R2-D2.
