A couple was charged with resisting an officer without violence, battery, and trespassing at Miami International Airport (MIA) after they arrived late for a flight bound for Cancún International Airport (CUN) yesterday. Allegedly, they tried to rush the gate of American Airlines flight AA2494 and even threw a cup of coffee into the face of an airline employee.

Miami seems to have more than its share of passengers behaving badly, fighting, being intoxicated, and more. This couple reportedly decided to ramp it up a bit and assault the staff. How anyone thinks that is going to get them on their flight is beyond me. Authorities arrived at the gate and arrested the pair.

The couple has been identified as Rafael Seirafe-Novaes and Beatriz Rapoport De Campos Maia according to NBC 6 South Florida. Onlookers took the video above as police attempted to subdue Seirafe-Novaes.

American Airlines released the following statement:

Prior to boarding American Airlines flight 2494from Miami (MIA) to Cancun (CUN), law enforcement responded to the gate for two disruptive customers. Acts of violence are not tolerated by American Airlines and we are committed to working closely with law enforcement in their investigation.”

Anthony’s Take: One has to wonder what makes people think that assaulting the gate agent and storming the gate is going to get them on the flight. Hopefully, a lesson learned with this behavior.

As a Miami native who hasn’t lived there for a couple of decades, crazy stories like this are not so outlandish in south Florida, barely rating an eye roll. Read Carl Hiaasen for examples, particularly Tourist Season.
