The bodies of six guests were found inside a locked suite at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok. Three men and three women were found dead by a hotel worker. Authorities are speculating this was the result of poisoning. There are more questions than answers around these mysterious deaths, but here is what has been revealed to date.
The Guardian reports that the six had been dead for at least 24 hours and noted that the suite was locked from the inside. The guests were in a Garden Villa (which is a suite type located near the pool). There were no signs of robbery or other attack. The cause of death has not been announced, but initial reports say that it was “presumably something related to consumption which needs to be investigated.”
Food from the hotel was found still sealed as it was delivered, but six used cups were nearby. Metropolitan Police Bureau Commissioner, Thiti Saengsawang, said:
The food was untouched but all six cups were used. We will check all of it. We could not find anything else around, even on the floor, but we found some kind of powder in the bottom of a cup. We need to find out the motives. [The deaths were not the result of suicide, but of a] killing.”
All of the deceased ranged in age from 37 to 56 and they were all of Vietnamese origin (two were American citizens). The group booked a stay for seven people, but only five checked in. It has not been confirmed if the sixth body was part of the seven that were supposed to be in the group. Their luggage had been packed and some were set to check out today while others were checking out yesterday.
These mysterious deaths make me think back to the couple I wrote about last year who died from carbon monoxide poisoning on their honeymoon in Mallorca (more here) and another who died at a resort in Mexico from the same cause (more here). This does not appear to be carbon monoxide as the cups were found and the authorities believe it to be murder.
Anthony’s Take: This seems like something out of a movie. My initial thought was mass suicide, but it seems that is being ruled out (although it might be murder/suicide). Let’s see what develops here.
