We were in New Jersey to see family for a little more than 24 hours. We needed a place to stay that was convenient to them and also gave us ready access to New York City. Usually, we’ll stay at the W Hoboken (review here) or the Hyatt Regency Jersey City, which is across from this hotel. The rates at both for our one-night stay were astronomical, so I took a chance and booked the Hyatt House Jersey City.
Anthony’s Take: The location is great. That is about where my praise ends. The staff was inefficient and the hotel was in need of repairs, refreshing, and cleaning. We did not have breakfast, but I would question eating anything in a hotel where a dumpster sits open filled with trash in the hallway by the elevators. I would not stay here again.
Booking
I booked a Members Save More rate for a King Studio Kitchen (Plus Sofa Bed). Rates at this hotel are reasonable and the cash rate was $259 plus taxes. If not paying cash, you can expect a range of 12,000-18,000 per night when redeeming World of Hyatt points.
Transportation to/from the Hotel
We flew into and out of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and rented a car. It took a little more than 30 minutes to drive the 11.5 miles to the hotel.
Location
The hotel is located in Exchange Place in Jersey City on the waterfront with great views of NYC. There are tons of nearby restaurants, stores, and more. The PATH train to New York is steps away from the hotel.
The lobby is located on the TR level. You need to take one of the ancient, slow-moving elevators there. Not all of them go to this level, so choose wisely.
The space used to house a bank and some of its original elements are there.
Check-in
We arrived at the hotel around 6:30 PM. The room was ready (as expected). Mobile keys were not working for the elevator even though it appeared in the app. The line was long and there was no dedicated line for World of Hyatt elite members. The agent was inefficient and taking forever with each guest. He chatted about the weather and anything else that came to mind. Check-in took a while even though I was already checked in and just needed keys. I had him print two and did not bother to even ask about upgrades since we were there for such a short time (multiple suites were available, but none were offered proactively). He handed me the keys, asked if I wanted any water, and we were on our way.
The hotel is in need of repair and quite dirty. A large dumpster filled with trash sat in the elevator lobby the entirety of our stay.
The trash was never emptied and was quite full when we left.
The hallways are also pretty worn.
1 King Studio Kitchen (Plus Sofa Bed) (1210)
There are 258 rooms and suites at the hotel.
You enter the room and step into the kitchen.
It was filled with all sorts of kitchen equipment, dishes, pots and pans, and more.
There was a tiny refrigerator and freezer (like you’d find in a college dorm room). The room was also equipped with a microwave, dishwasher, and cooktop.
Dishwashing liquid was on the counter.
The living room was next to the kitchen.
It held a chair, couch, some ottomans, tables, and lamps. The TV swiveled for use in both the living room and bedroom areas.
The bedroom was across from the living room. It held a king-sized bed and two nightstands as well as a dresser.
The clock radio was on one nightstand.
A closet was next to the bed. It held an extra pillow, iron and ironing board, and safe.
Just about every surface in the rooms from the carpet to the shades to the walls was scuffed, scratched, and worn.
The views were decent.
The bathroom entrance was next to the closet. It held a glassed-in shower, toilet, and vanity with a single sink.
The vanity held towels and a blowdryer.
A bar of KenetMD soap was on the vanity.
The toilet had enough space.
The shower’s water pressure and temperature were both fine. Large bottles of KenetMD shampoo, conditioner, and body wash were in the shower.
Breakfast
Like all Hyatt House locations, this one offers complimentary breakfast. The breakfast room off of the lobby was closed when we arrived and we did not go to check it out in the morning.
Public Areas & Amenities
The hotel has a fitness center, snacks and drinks for sale by the front desk, a laundry room, and a rooftop bar. We did not get to use any of the amenities as our stay was too short.
We did not have a chance to check out the rooftop bar, but two prostitutes in the elevator asked us where it was. They were clearly there to work and asked my husband and I if we were from out of town as a pickup line.
The laundry room is on the second floor.
The fitness center has no windows and is rather basic.
It offers towels.
And, had a water cooler.
I did appreciate that there was a Peloton Bike here.
More equipment
There are also two restrooms in the fitness center.
Overall Impression:
The Hyatt House Jersey City needs some TLC. It’s dirty, dated, and worn. I did not find much to like about the hotel and can’t say I’ll be booking it again.
