Hong Kong Airlines is considering flights to the United States according to the Business Times. This ambition has long been in the carrier’s mind, but a trio of used Boeing 787 aircraft might make it a reality in 2025.
The airline was established in 2006 and currently flies to 25 destinations across Asia and the Pacific. It’s looking to add service to four North American routes including two in the United States. These include:
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
- Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
- Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) would be new destinations for Hong Kong Airlines, while the other two would be resumptions. Hong Kong Airlines also used to fly to San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The decision to relaunch longhaul flights comes after the company went through a $6.2 billion debt restructuring in 2022. This nearly made the company go bankrupt and forced it to sell off most of the 53 planes that were in its fleet.
Hong Kong Airlines currently operates a fleet of Airbus aircraft. Purchasing these three aircraft would add Boeing to the mix.
Anthony’s Take: Hong Kong is my favorite city in the world. The possibility of another carrier (besides United and Cathay Pacific) connecting the United States nonstop is exciting.

Do you have any trepidation about traveling to Hong Kong these days? I love the city but I’m very leery of visiting at this point.
That’s a silly fear. Everyday life in the city is identical to how you likely remember it. Unless you intend to do political protests, you won’t feel any different now than before. I’ve been to HK 8 times since 2019 and many dozens of times before that, and can assure you, life is the same as always if you aren’t planning to be politically active.
Considering that the airline can’t even pay for in-flight entertainment and its IFE screens are kept black on flights, even international widebodies, for the past few years, I wonder if they plan to restore basic levels of service before planning to expand routes. I fly them frequently in Asia because they are usually the cheapest option, but it is basically like traveling by bus, even in business class. Terribly run down planes with dirty seats, broken latches everywhere, quite possibly the most substandard airline that I fly, and I fly many airlines often.
