Frontier Airlines has announced that James G. Dempsey will assume the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer effective today, December 15th. Dempsey, who currently serves as the company’s President will step into the position as longtime CEO Barry L. Biffle moves into an advisory role through the end of the year.

Dempsey brings more than a decade of leadership experience within Frontier to his new role. He joined the airline in 2014 as Chief Financial Officer and later advanced to President to oversee key operational and financial strategies during a period of significant network expansion. Before his tenure at Frontier, Dempsey held senior management positions at Ryanair Holdings PLC and earlier served in various management roles at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The leadership transition comes as Frontier continues its rapid growth across the United States and abroad. The appointment of Dempsey as interim CEO signals continuity for the company as it navigates evolving market conditions and prepares for its next phase of development. Further updates on the permanent CEO search are expected as Frontier evaluates its long-term leadership strategy heading into 2026.

Frontier Airlines

Investing.com reports that the leadership change comes as the airline faces significant financial challenges. The company has not been profitable over the last year with negative EBITDA of $302 million. Frontier Airlines operates the largest A320neo fleet in the US and employs more than 13,000 people. It’s been working to reinvent itself, but has found that post-pandemic it was at a loss without a premium product. First Class is coming next year, but Frontier has a lot of catching up to do as market conditions have shifted and passengers want better experiences.

Frontier Airlines Board Chair, Bill Franke, shared:

Jimmy has been an invaluable member of Frontier’s senior leadership team for more than 10 years and has played an instrumental role in the company’s evolution and growth during that time. We believe Jimmy is uniquely qualified to guide our airline into the future. The Board of Directors is deeply appreciative of Barry’s leadership and dedicated service to Frontier over the past 11 years. We thank him for his many contributions during his tenure.”

Anthony’s Take: Barry Biffle was at them helm of Frontier Airlines for 10+ years and it’s time for someone new to take over and lead Frontier into its next chapter.
