Delta Air Lines announced several new routes to/from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) yesterday. It also made some tweaks to its schedule and three routes are getting the axe. Interestingly, one of these was long-speculated to be flying for the purposes of nothing more than gate squatting in Austin and that now looks to be proven true.
Two non-hub flights to Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) will be pulled on January 11th. These are currently flown daily, including:
- Sacramento International Airport (SMF)
- San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)
Both of these routes are flown by several other airlines like Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines.
Midland, TX was an odd addition to Delta’s route map when it was announced back in December 2023. It was clear to aviation experts that Delta was adding these flights (in April 2024) to hold the gates while it plotted its next move. The flights were inexpensive to operate and bought time. With the new additions this week, Delta has found better uses for the gates. Flights to/from Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) will end on November 8th. These were running 3x daily and 2x on Saturdays. Delta will continue its other short, intra-Texas route: McAllen International Airport (MFE) to/from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS).
Anthony’s Take: It will be interesting to see if this other short route holds or if Delta finds a better use for the aircraft and gate. The airline’s growth in Austin is impressive and we’ll see how much more of a play it makes there.
