Delta Air Lines is making big moves in the Latin American market with restored routes and increased frequencies. The airline has announced a bunch of new flights to many destinations in Costa Rica, Mexico, Honduras, and the Caribbean.

Costa Rica

These new frequencies are set to begin on December 16th and run through January 7th. Delta is also restoring service to Cozumel International Airport (CZM), which they had dropped at the beginning of the pandemic. This route will run daily from Atlanta (ATL) (beginning November 5th) and three times weekly from Minneapolis (MSP) (beginning on December 16th).

  • Increased service (daily from three to four flights) from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Santiago Airport (STI)

Delta’s decision to expand its presence in Latin America is likely driven by the strong demand for leisure travel that has not seemed to settle down since the pandemic ended. With all of these additional flights, Delta will operate its largest-ever holiday schedule to Latin America with over 25,000 daily seats to 44 destinations.

Edited to add: Delta will also be adding daily service from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport (GIG) starting on December 16th. Thank you to reader, Mak for pointing this other route out.

Anthony’s Take: Delta’s expansion into Latin America is great news for holiday travelers looking to get away from the cold. With more flight options, travelers have new ways to explore Central America and the Caribbean this year.

This misses the most important new Delta route . . . JFK-GIG (Rio de Janeiro). Starting December 16, 2023. UA long ago abandoned this route and AA serves it poorly with a seasonal flight three times a week. 2 cities with catchment areas comprising 20+ million or so people that has no direct flight for 80% of the year.

Of course, if the new Brazilian government re-institutes visas for Americans, these flights will be half empty and the route will fail pretty quickly. So there’s that . . .
