I’m currently on a delayed Delta Air Lines flight from New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Tampa International Airport (TPA). We left around 2.5 hours late, but many others have fared much worse today on Delta and JetBlue as the two carriers currently lead in travel woes as a storm is heading for the NYC-area. This is wreaking havoc across the Northeast just as millions of travelers begin their post-Christmas journey home.

FlightAware is currently showing 1,402 cancellations in the United States and an additional 4,844 flights delayed. New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is seeing 234 cancellations and 125 delays. Delta Air Lines and JetBlue both seem to be bearing the brunt of the storm. Delta has already canceled more than 200 flights and faced around 400 delays. This has affected about 18% of its schedule. Its regional partner, Endeavor Air, is also struggling with cancellations and delays (around 42% of its operations have been impacted).
JetBlue’s situation is even worse. With large operations at New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), the airline has already canceled over 220 flights and delayed more than 200 more. This represents more than 40% of its schedule.
Both American Airlines and United Airlines are faring much better with less than half the number of cancelled flights of Delta or JetBlue. Only around 2% of their operations are impacted. Weather forecasters are calling for heavy snow to hit the New York area. The storm is not only grounding local flights but also threatening to throw aircraft and crews out of position nationwide. This could potentially lead to a chain reaction of cancellations. The snow is supposed to begin this afternoon and all eyes are on its potential damage to airline schedules.
The New York area is already melting down with more than 500 flights cancelled today and more than 275 axed for tomorrow.
Anthony’s Take: I had to spend an extra two hours in the Delta SkyClub®, but I’m thankfully on my way home to Florida. I hope the storm blows over and is not as bad as it’s forecasted. If you’re traveling in the Northeast, be safe, patient, and have a backup plan.
