In the latest round of cuts this summer, Delta Air Lines has reduced its August flight schedule from New York City and Washington DC by around six percent. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is waiving the minimum usage requirements for slots at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Delta seems to be taking advantage of this opportunity.
Delta’s will see 2,006 less flights in August, which equals a 5.6% reduction. Flights between New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) will decrease by 37%. Flights between New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) will see 77 flights cut in each direction during the month of August. Delta also had five daily flights scheduled between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), but this will drop to three per day.
Other reductions include:
- LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Hartford Bradley International Airport (BDL), Bangor International Airport (BGR), Charleston International Airport (CHS), Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Denver International Airport (DEN), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Miami International Airport (MIA), Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), and Tampa International Airport (TPA)
- Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
- Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
- New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Charleston International Airport (CHS), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), Norfolk International Airport (ORF), Portland International Airport (PDX), Portland International Jetport (PWM), San Diego International Airport (SAN), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Santo Domingo Airport (SDQ), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), and Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR)
One bright spot is the addition of flights between LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). Delta is resuming these flights for the first time in ten years this August.
Anthony’s Take: Airline schedules are in constant flux with additions and reductions. Check your reservations if you’re planning to travel on any of these routes. It’s going to be an interesting summer with demand at an all-time high. I’m glad that Delta and others are being proactive early.
