Passengers traveling between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Zurich Airport (ZRH) on United Airlines yesterday saw flights divert in both directions due to a sick pilot and then a flight attendant injury. You have to wonder if a route is cursed when the flights in both directions end up in Canada.

@JonNYC first reported on the ill-fated flights.

UA 12

United flight UA12 from Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) diverted to Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) after a pilot fell ill. The aircraft was only on the ground for around 90 minutes before it continued on to its original destination.

UA3

While this was happening, United flight UA3 from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Zurich Airport (ZRH) also diverted. A flight attendant got injured in flight and the plane was forced to divert to Gander International Airport (YQX) in Newfoundland. After the diversion, the aircraft returned to Chicago and was cancelled.

UA12 Cancelled

Today’s flight from Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) has also been cancelled as a result of the earlier issues.

Anthony’s Take: Flights divert all the time, but it’s rare that a single airline would have flights divert in both directions on the same route and same day.
