United Airlines flight UA613 from Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) was forced to divert to its origin after a technical issue resulted in a loss of cabin pressure and caused passengers and crew members to sustain injuries.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner declared an emergency after it suddenly descended by nearly 200 feet twice over a short period while flying above Côte d’Ivoire. The incident occurred around one hour into the flight and pilots scrambled to get the aircraft back to Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS).

Video and images taken on the flight show food and other service items strewn about the aircraft. The plane was carrying 245 passengers and 11 crew. At least six people sustained injuries serious enough to require them to be taken to the hospital. Another 27 passengers and crew members suffered minor injuries.

United Airlines is investigating the cause of the “technical issue” and the aircraft will remain grounded until this is determined. The Chicago-based carrier released the following statement:

Our flight from Lagos, Nigeria to Washington DC returned to Lagos after a technical issue and an unexpected aircraft movement. It landed safely in Lagos and four passengers and two flight attendants were seen at a hospital for minor injuries and have been released. We are working with aviation authorities in the U.S. and Nigeria to understand the cause.”

Anthony’s Take: I can only imagine how scary this flight must have been. Thankfully, the pilots were able to safely land. Sending wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured on the flight.
