United’s Excursionist Perk was a free one-way award within select multi-city trips between at least two award regions. Members who booked a trip with three or more one-way awards could get the first award for free. This meant that you could book a trip from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and spend some time there before heading to another European destination like Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and onward to the United States for the same price as the roundtrip award ticket (with no additional miles deducted for the segment to Paris). This ends on August 20th, so act now if you’re looking to book this.

Excursionist Perk

PointsMath created an excellent chart that outlines exactly how the process works and what cities are considered to be within a specific region when booking. Trips need to meet these conditions:

  • Your trip starts and ends in the same region.
  • The free Excursionist Perk flight starts and ends in the same region.
  • Your trip starts in a different region than the free Excursionist Perk flight.
  • The free Excursionist Perk flight’s cabin and award tier must be the same or lower than the flight before it.

Reservations booked before August 21st that have taken advantage of this benefit will still be honored.

Anthony’s Take: The removal of this benefit was one of three negative changes that United announced back in May. The other two saw the removal of Instant Upgrades as well as the deletion of award charts.
