Avelo Airlines is a low-cost carrier that launched in 2021. The airline operates a fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft and serves destinations across the United States. The carrier announced today that it has officially opened its sixth aircraft base at the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS) and doubled the number of flights there.

Avelo Airlines Map

Avelo offers eight nonstop routes (more than any other airline) to/from the Bay Area’s Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS). These include:

  • Boise Airport (BOI) (2x weekly on Thursdays and Sundays; starts on May 2nd)
  • Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) (2x weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays; starts today, May 1st)
  • Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) (4x weekly)
  • Las Vegas Harry Reird International Airport (LAS) (4x weekly)
  • Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) (2x weekly)
  • Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) (2x weekly)
  • Salem Municipal Airport (SLE) (2x weekly on Mondays and Fridays; starts on May 3rd)
  • Tri-Cities Airport (PSC) (2x weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays; starts today, May 1st)

The airport is a base as of today, May 1st. Avelo will initially house two Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft at the airport. It expects to employ as many as 50 pilots, flight attendants, and maintenance technicians there.

Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO, Andrew Levy, said:

We are excited to celebrate the opening of our 6th base and the inauguration of four exciting destinations from STS. Sonoma County Airport holds a special spot in Avelo’s history – serving as the destination for Avelo’s first flight on April 28, 2021. This new base not only marks a significant step forward in our growth, but also underscores our commitment to providing affordable, convenient, and reliable service to travelers in the Bay Area. We look forward to welcoming aboard our new and returning Bay Area Customers and to making it even easier for travelers from these four locations to visit California Wine Country.”

Avelo recently celebrated its third birthday (more here). The airline currently flies 77 routes across 52 destinations. It looks to add flights to underserved airports and tiny markets. One recent example is the new flights it will offer from Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL). It’s a 35-minute drive from me in Tampa and is closer to attractions like Walt Disney World without all the hassle of Orlando International Airport (MCO). I’m planning on taking the inaugural flight to Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport (HVN) on June 13th. Lakeland has not seen commercial service in over 10 years, so this is exciting news for locals.

Anthony’s Take: Avelo Airline continues to grow and expand. It’s hitting underserved airports and making travel convenient for those outside of major airports (although it’s entering some of those). I look forward to my flight and checking out what this carrier has to offer on June 13th.
