I fly American Airlines a few times a year (if at all). I got an email today, saying: “Anthony, AAdvantage Gold® status can be yours.” I opened it to see if this was possibly a challenge or a less-likely status match. Instead, I was met with an offer.
Since I don’t fly American often (and when I do I purchase first class), I wasn’t sure what I was being offered.
The benefits are in line with other carriers lower-tier perks. Never a bad thing to earn extra miles if I happen to fly American. But, it’s not until you click the shiny, gold button above that you find out the catch.
It’s $1,499 or 150,000 miles to become AAdvantage Gold® through March 2024! This is more than I spend on premium cabin tickets with the airline annually and certainly not an offer I’ll be taking American up on.
Anthony’s Take: If I flew American, I’d likely have status with the airline. Since I don’t regularly fly them, I would see next-to-no benefit from taking this offer. I also buy first and business class tickets, so upgrades wouldn’t matter and with those tickets come seats and free bags. Thanks for thinking of me American, but I’ll pass.
