It’s hard to believe that Christmas is next week, but both American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are expecting the season to be merry as they plan to transport more passengers than ever before between December 18th and January 6th. The carriers are looking at 22 million passengers taking to the skies (12.7 and 9.3 million, respectively).
American will operate 118,000 flights this holiday season. Delta will fly an additional 75,000. American canceled the fewest mainline flights compared to its major network competitors over the Thanksgiving holiday. There were four days when it did not cancel a single mainline flight, three days without a single regional flight cancelled, and one day when the airline did not cancel any flights.
Delta plans to give customers more peace of mind with their checked bags as it’s one of the first airlines to integrate Apple’s new Share Item Location feature. Delta passengers can now easily and securely share the location of an AirTag or Find My network accessory with Delta customer service. This lets agents see real-time locations and help to more quickly reunite customers with their lost items.
American shared some fun facts around its planned holiday travel season. These include:
- The most-traveled day will be Friday, December 27th with Friday, December 20th as the second busiest.
- 1,500 mainline and regional aircraft will travel more than 102 million miles during the travel period. That’s equal to almost 1.1 trillion candy canes laid end to end.
- During the winter holiday season, American will serve more than 6.6 million bags of pretzels.
- Last year, American’s passengers watched nearly 20 million minutes of holiday-themed movies and TV shows while in flight during the holiday period.
Anthony’s Take: We’re flying to NYC and then visiting family in NJ next week. I’m hoping for smooth travel and know that I’ll arrive early, be ready for delays, and stay on top of finding alternate plans if needed.
