Demand for travel to Europe drops dramatically in the winter. American Airlines is preparing for reduced passenger loads by cutting several European routes for a period of weeks to months this year. A few have already ceased and others pause later this month.

American Airlines 777

Impacted routes include:

  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to/from Munich Airport (MUC) (ends January 25th; returns February 11th)
  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to/from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) (ended January 5th; returns February 12th)
  • New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to/from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) (ends January 27th; returns February 11th)
  • New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to/from Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) (ended January 5th; returns January 28th)
  • New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to/from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) (ended January 6th; returns March 4th)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Zurich Airport (ZRH) (ended January 5th; returns January 29th)

Aircraft serving these routes will be used on South American flights during the higher-demand season this winter.

Anthony’s Take: American retired tons of aircraft during the pandemic and is still working on building back its fleet. Taking this winter pause will allow it to serve routes where demand is stronger (although the Paris pause is a bit surprising).
