American Airlines has been retreating from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) for some time. Back in November, I wrote about how the airline cut 21 of the 46 routes it was serving. Now, further cuts are on the horizon with five more routes getting the axe.

Simple Flying first reported on the upcoming cuts at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The following routes are being eliminated on October 6th:

  • Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)
  • Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)

These three leisure routes used to run year round. American is also removing two seasonal routes from its schedule. These include:

  • Palm Springs International Airport (PSP)
  • Reno–Tahoe International Airport (RNO)

American Eagle

This is in addition to the recent news that American is also dropping Indianapolis International Airport (IND) on August 5th. When all routes are cut, American will fly to 15 destinations from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The remaining cities include:

  • Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) (seasonal)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Cancún International Airport (CUN)
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Los Cabos International Airport (SJD)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Nashville International Airport (BNA)
  • New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU)

Delta flies nonstop to both Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) and Orlando International Airport (MCO).

An American Airlines spokesperson released the following statement:

As part of the continuous evaluation of our network, American will reduce service from Austin starting in October. American will continue to offer customers access to our comprehensive global network of more than 350 destinations with one-stop connections.”

Anthony’s Take: As American has retreated, Delta has continued to hold onto gates and treat Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) as a focus city. We’ll see if American continues to hack up its route network here.

ugh this is terrible. I’ve flown the LAS, MCO, and PSP routes. I wish they could have made AUS work as a mini hub.
