Alaska Airlines is having a busy day. Earlier today, I wrote about how its combined FAA Operating Certificate was approved so that Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights could operate under one certificate while maintaining their distinct brands. That celebration of a significant milestone was short lived as a global Microsoft Azure outage has caused both Alaska’s website and mobile app to go down. What’s even worse is that this is the second significant tech outage in a week (after the AWS issues on October 23rd).
The outage occurred around 9:10 AM PT. Alaska released the following statement at the time:
Our website and app are down, it is being looked into we don’t have any other information at this time I am so sorry for the inconvenience.”
Hours later, it took to social media to express that the outage was still ongoing and to ask passengers to “see an agent at the airport for a boarding pass.” Microsoft’s Azure status page is still showing that it’s down with no timeline released for this to be remedied. Alaska is far from the only one impacted. The outage has also taken out Xbox Live, Office 365, Costco, Starbucks, and many others.
Anthony’s Take: It’s crazy to see what happens when service providers like AWS and Microsoft have issues with their cloud platforms and end up shutting down business globally. This will hopefully be fixed soon and not cause the number of delays and cancellations that Alaska saw last week.

Oh, is this why Starbucks online ordering is down too? And my BMW app?
