Alaska Airlines announced yesterday that it’s elevating the inflight experience with Starlink-powered Wi-Fi rolling out across its fleet. Alaska will be the latest carrier to offer guests the fastest, most reliable inflight internet service. By 2027, every Alaska aircraft (from regional to widebody) will be fully connected.
Starlink adoption is rapidly occurring at airlines around the world. United Airlines will be its largest airline partner, but others like airBaltic, Air France, Air New Zealand, Hawaiian Airlines, Qatar Airways, SAS, Virgin Atlantic, and WestJet have plans to install it as well. With latency under 99 milliseconds and speeds up to 500 Mbps, Starlink delivers inflight internet that is 7x faster than traditional satellite-based systems. This high-bandwidth, low-latency technology supports workplace messaging, live gaming, video streaming, and multi-device use without interruption. Guests can expect a seamless, gate-to-gate connection that rivals their home networks.
As Seattle’s largest carrier, Alaska will offer more Starlink-equipped departures from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) than any other airline and it will be the first US airline to operate Starlink-enabled long-haul flights from there. Passengers traveling to Asia or Europe will no longer face frustrating drop-offs in service.
This initiative follows Hawaiian Airlines’ 2024 launch of Starlink service, with both carriers now joining the new industry standard. Alaska plans to offer free access to its most loyal guests, thanks to an exclusive partnership. Alaska plans to offer Starlink service for free to all members of its new Atmos™ Rewards loyalty program.
Ben Minicucci, Chief Executive Officer and President of Alaska Air Group, said:
With Starlink already live on Hawaiian Airlines and installations starting this winter across Alaska’s fleet, we’re proud that we’ll offer the fastest, most reliable inflight internet in the skies – with gate-to-gate connectivity on nearly every aircraft across both airlines.”
Anthony’s Take: I can’t wait until true high-speed internet is available on every plane at every airline. We’re quite far from that, but it’s exciting to see this rollout along with those of all of the other carriers adopting Starlink.
