Air Canada Suspends 10 Routes After Announcing Several Sunny Expansions This Winter

Yesterday, I wrote about Air Canada’s busy winter schedule with expanded frequencies and new destinations for those seeking sunny holidays this coming winter. Today, it’s been noted that the Canadian airline is cutting 10 US routes for the winter with resumption planned in May or June 2025.

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)

Passengers traveling to/from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) will see several US markets lose service this winter. These include:

  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) (paused on October 13th)
  • Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) (paused on October 13th)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) (paused on October 13th)
  • Hartford’s Bradley International Airport (BDL) (paused on October 26th)
  • Indianapolis International Airport (IND) (paused on October 26th)

Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL)

Passengers traveling to/from Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) will also see four US markets cut this winter. These include:

  • Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) (paused on October 13th)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) (paused on October 26th)
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN) (paused on October 26th)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) (paused on October 25th)

Anthony’s Take: I initially thought that Air Canada had to get the planes from somewhere to cover its winter schedule. These routes mostly represent places that leisure travelers don’t want to head to in the winter. But, a reader pointed out that this also could be an issue with a shortage of pilots, which is a more likely conclusion.

Is it the planes or pilots that are needed? Something else must be happening. The YYZ suspensions are all RJ service on Jazz or other AIrCanada affiliates. I don’t think they are shifting RJ’s for snowbird service.

In 2022 when Sky Regional merged with Jazz they had 1700 pilots on property. 2 months ago I saw the seniority list they o my have 950 pilots on property.

This is entirely AC management’s fault. They refused to give the needed pay increases and for 9 months Porter was offering 50% higher wages. They finally upped their wages by the minimum amount possible to stabilize the shrunken operations. They also didn’t respect the Jazz contract with flow to mainline, causing many pilots to leave for WestJet and other competitors.
