JetBlue Airways wasted no time in pouncing on picking up routes that now-shuttered Spirit Airlines had flown to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The airline is adding 11 routes previously flown by the bright yellow planes.

New routes to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) include:

  • Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAQ) (1x daily; starts on October 1st)
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) (3x daily; starts on July 9th)
  • Cali’s Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport (CLO) (1x daily; starts on October 15th)
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) (3x daily; starts on July 9th)
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) (2x daily; starts on July 9th)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) (1x daily; starts on November 2nd)

  • Nashville International Airport (BNA) (3x daily; starts on July 9th)
  • Ponce’s Mercedita International Airport (PSE) (1x daily; starts on July 9th)

Of the new routes, six are to/from airports not currently served by JetBlue. These include:

  • Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAQ)
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Cali’s Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport (CLO)

Joanna Geraghty, Chief Executive Officer of JetBlue, said:

South Florida is a key market for JetBlue, and we recognize this is a challenging moment for many travelers. Our focus is on stepping up in the near term by adding service, maintaining connectivity, and keeping fares competitive, so customers can continue to travel with confidence.”

Anthony’s Take: JetBlue has not had an easy go of it lately either. I still think that United will acquire the airline, but in the interim this is a smart move and will likely garner some goodwill for JetBlue.
