United Airlines is increasing checked bag fees for new tickets purchased on April 3rd. The fee hike follows a similar move by JetBlue and reflects broader industry pressures tied to rising fuel costs and the conflict with Iran.

The updated pricing applies to tickets purchased on or after April 3rd (not the date of travel). That means travelers booking today can still lock in lower baggage fees. For flights within the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America, the cost of a first checked bag will increase by $10. Second checked bag fees will also rise by $10. Third checked bag fees will see a steeper jump of $50. Long-haul international routes (including flights to Europe and Asia) are not currently affected by the changes.

The increase comes as airlines face mounting financial pressure (particularly from higher fuel prices). Disruptions to global energy supply chains have tightened fuel availability and pushed carriers to look for new ways to offset costs. Rather than raising base fares alone, airlines are increasingly turning to ancillary fees such as baggage charges, seats, benefits, and more as ways to boost revenue.

United will continue to offer a small incentive for passengers who plan ahead. Customers who prepay for checked bags at least 24 hours before departure will still receive a $5 discount compared to airport pricing. This approach aligns with the airline’s broader strategy of encouraging digital self-service.

Not all travelers will feel the impact of the higher fees. Passengers flying in premium cabins, including Premium Economy, Business, and First Class will continue to receive at least one free checked bag. United’s elite status members and active-duty military personnel are also exempt from paying for their first checked bag. Additionally, customers who hold eligible United co-branded credit cards can avoid the fee entirely (as these cards typically include a free first checked bag as a benefit). The last increase to checked bag costs came in 2024.

Anthony’s Take: As airlines continue to navigate a volatile economic environment, baggage fees are becoming an increasingly important part of the overall cost of travel. I bet American and Delta follow suit shortly.
