Back in January 2025, I wrote about SAS being one of the latest airlines to sign on for Starlink free, high-speed Wi-Fi across its entire fleet. Now that upgrade is starting to roll out and it marks a significant shift in the airline’s onboard experience by bringing faster, more reliable internet to passengers from gate to gate.

The new system is powered by Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite network. It delivers speeds of up to 500+ Mbps (far exceeding traditional inflight Wi-Fi performance). With more than 10,000 satellites supporting the network, SAS expects consistent connectivity even on routes where service has historically been unreliable (including flights over northern Europe and remote regions). This level of performance allows passengers to stream content, work in real time, game, and stay connected throughout the entire journey.
As part of the launch, SAS has partnered with telecom provider 3 to offer complimentary Wi-Fi access to EuroBonus members starting today, March 24th. The move is designed to strengthen customer loyalty while introducing a more seamless digital experience onboard. It also signals the beginning of a broader commercial partnership between SAS and 3 with additional benefits expected over time.
The initial rollout will focus on SAS’ Airbus A320 fleet, which makes the airline the first in Europe to introduce Starlink connectivity on this aircraft type. Installations are already underway and SAS expects a significant portion of its fleet to be equipped with the new system before the peak summer travel season. Additional aircraft types will follow later in the year (pending regulatory approvals).
SAS sees high-speed connectivity as more than just a passenger perk. The airline is positioning it as the foundation for a new generation of onboard services including enhanced entertainment, productivity tools, and real-time engagement. The initiative is part of SAS’ broader turnaround strategy with a renewed focus on improving the overall travel experience through digital innovation.
Ahead of the official rollout, SAS conducted a demonstration flight in January to showcase the system’s capabilities under real-world conditions. The test highlighted strong performance even at northern latitudes, with passengers able to stream, communicate, and interact online without interruption.
Paul Verhagen, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, said:
Connectivity has become a natural part of everyday life, including when traveling. With this launch, we are taking a major step toward offering our customers a more flexible, productive and enjoyable time on board. Whether they want to work, create, play or stay in touch, this solution brings the onboard experience closer to how people live today.”
Anthony’s Take: With the introduction of Starlink Wi-Fi, SAS is setting a new benchmark for inflight connectivity in Europe. As more aircraft come online with the system, passengers can expect a travel experience that feels increasingly connected, productive, and aligned with the expectations of modern travelers. I love to see this continue to roll out and take the guesswork out of whether you’ll be able to connect in flight.
