A 29-year-old female passenger has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a Delta Air Lines flight attendant and later attacking police officers at Memphis International Airport (MEM) as a flight prepared to depart for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).

Jessica Thomas

The incident occurred around midday on February 17th at Gate 12, where Delta flight DL 82 was scheduled to depart for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Details of the altercation were just released by the Memphis Police Department. According to authorities, officers were called to the gate after reports that the passenger, identified as Jessica Thomas, had reportedly struck a flight attendant in the face while the aircraft was still at the gate. Crew members immediately reported the incident, which prompted law enforcement to board the plane before departure.

Police allege that when officers attempted to detain Thomas, she became irate and physically combative. During the struggle, she allegedly bit one officer on the arm and kicked another officer in both legs. Thomas now faces charges of disorderly conduct, two counts of assault on a first responder, and one count of assault. She was taken into custody and transported to Shelby County Jail (where she is being held on a bond of $2,500).

Despite the disruption, the flight ultimately departed Memphis International Airport (MEM) approximately 37 minutes behind schedule. This is not the only incident with an abusive passenger this week. On Wednesday, I wrote about another Delta Air Lines flight. This one was traveling from Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and was forced to make an emergency return shortly after takeoff when an unruly passenger caused a serious onboard disturbance.

Anthony’s Take: Another incident that has me scratching my head. I will never understand what makes people act so irrational and selfish when in airports and on airplanes.
