The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared to screen more than 18 million people to fly for the Memorial Day weekend holiday (it considers today, May 22nd through May 28th as the holiday travel period). This comes just weeks after REAL ID requirements went into effect. Expect lots of confused infrequent travelers and longer waits this weekend.
The agency expects this to just be the start with increased passenger counts through Labor Day weekend. While many are fearing a recession, job loss, and other global issues, it’s not stopping them from taking to the skies. The TSA reports that since implementing REAL ID requirements on May 7th that 93% of passengers are in compliance with a REAL ID or using another acceptable form of ID like a passport.
TSA Acting Administrator, Ha McNeill, said:
TSA is ready for the additional passenger volume, and we look forward to welcoming families traveling during this peak period. As a friendly reminder, to ensure a smooth screening experience, bring acceptable forms of ID like your REAL ID.”
Anthony’s Take: I’m traveling today and definitely saw Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) packed with people heading on vacation. You could tell by the crowd that many do not travel often (based on questions and general confusion). If you’re traveling over the next few days be patient and arrive early to contend with all of the extra travelers.
