United Airlines is adding nonstop service to the Caribbean island of Dominica. Flights will begin on February 15th between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Dominica’s Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM). Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, the island is part of the Windward Islands chain in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea.
Flights will run 1x weekly on Saturdays using a Boeing 737-700 aircraft. This offers 12 First Class, 36 Economy Plus®, and 78 Economy Class seats. This decision to fly to Dominica was partially influenced by the extensive renovations and upgrades made to Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM). This includes a 6,351-foot runway extension and the addition of runway grooving to help accommodate larger aircraft and enhance safety for all. The terminal has also been upgraded to increase capacity and improve overall operational efficiency. American Airlines is the only other major US carrier to fly here as it flies from Miami International Airport (MIA).
Dominica is looking to boost tourism and has several new hotels in the works. These will add nearly 500 rooms, which is a 25% increase in hotel inventory. The new route will arrive in Dominica in time for the Caribbean nation’s Mas Domnik Carnival. It runs from March 3rd to 4th and is known as the “Real Mas.” The celebration stays true to traditional Carnival customs, including calypso music, Carnival competitions, and various activities leading up to two exciting days of festivities.

Anthony’s Take: I’ve never been to Dominica, but it looks beautiful. United continues to have the strongest and most interesting route network of any US carrier.
