Spirit Airlines has been the butt of many late-night comics’ jokes. We’ve all seen the fight videos. They usually take place in Miami International Airport (MIA) or Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). But, Spirit is evolving and with those changes it hopes to shake off some of its (in my opinion undeserved) bad reputation and woo premium flyers with today’s announcement.
Let’s face it, domestic First Class is not glamorous. The food is meh and it’s really all about the space. I am lucky enough to book all of my travel in the front of plane (usually in the bulkhead aisle). I’m six-foot-five-inches tall and am uncomfortable in most Economy seats (although I’m good width-wise). When I book United or Delta it’s up front and on Spirit (my other preferred carrier), I always book a BIG FRONT SEAT®. This is a domestic First Class seat and with the addition of free drinks and snacks as well as free Wi-Fi, it will be akin to (if not slightly better than) what the legacy carriers offer as their premium options.
On October 27th, Spirit will no longer just sell the BIG FRONT SEATS® as an add on, but will classify them as an entirely new offering. The seats will be sold as “Go Big” fares and will be the equivalent of Spirit’s First Class. These will include the following:
- A BIG FRONT SEAT®
- Complimentary snacks and drinks (including alcoholic beverages)
- One carry-on bag
- One checked bag
- Priority check-in and boarding
- Streaming access to Wi-Fi
If you’re not aware, the BIG FRONT SEATS® feature enhanced comfort with wider seats, extra legroom, additional seat cushioning, and no middle seats. They are what you’ll find at the front of American, Delta, Alaska, and United flights.
Anthony’s Take: This all sounds good to me. I like Spirit. I’m just curious if additional benefits will be added for Gold members and what the pricing will look like for this “First Class” experience.
