Earlier this month, I wrote about Delta Air Lines launching daily flights from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Bridgetown’s Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) beginning next fall. Now, American Airlines is adding service to its schedule from two Northeast airports.

Starting on November 5th, American Airlines will begin offering daily flights between Bridgetown’s Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Saturday-only flights from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) will launch on November 9th. These flights will utilize a Boeing 737-800 aircraft (16 First Class, 30 Main Cabin Extra, and either 114 or 126 Main Cabin seats) for New York and an Airbus A321 (16 First Class, 15 or 36 Main Cabin Extra, and either 129 or 156 Main Cabin seats) for Philadelphia.

Barbados

According to Zach Griff at The Points Guy, these routes were last flown by American in 2014 and US Airways in 2010. Delta has also not flown to Barbados since 2017. Both carriers are looking to chip away at JetBlue’s marketshare since it has been the leading US carrier in Bridgetown for many years. The market is valuable and JetBlue flies an Airbus A321 with Mint seats on this Caribbean route.

American spokesperson, Jay Singh, issued a statement to The Points Guy. It reads:

This winter, we’ll operate up to three daily flights from Miami and one from CLT alongside the JFK/PHL service for up to six peak-day flights this winter – the most of any U.S. carrier.”

Anthony’s Take: There is a lot of capacity headed to Barbados in the fall. It will be interesting to see if seats fill or we’ll see some sales on these routes.

I’m glad AA is adding more BGI flights. They have the most with 4 flights (3 MIA, 1 CLT) and will soon add to that to keep their lead. Jetblue has 2 JFK-BGI and BOS on Saturdays. Too bad Jetblue didn’t keep the AA code share. They could have kept that as the judge did allow it, but they were hoping to overpay for Spirit.
