Frontier Airlines announced big changes last week to its product offering in an effort it has dubbed “The New Frontier.” This included clearer upfront pricing with seats, baggage, and more. It also meant the end of change and cancellation fees, which is a customer-friendly move and aligns it with most other US carriers. Spirit must have felt some pressure from this change as it quickly responded by waiving most change and cancellation fees itself.

There is no official press release or announcement, but the homepage of Spirit.com shows that change and cancellation fees are gone.

Spirit Change Fees 2

Spirit used to charge fees based on how close a flight’s departure was with this sliding scale:

  • 0-6 days before departure: $119
  • 7-30 days before departure: $99
  • 31-59 days before departure: $69
  • More than 60 days before departure: $0

Now, there are no change or cancellation fees regardless of when you’re flying. The new policy is even more generous than what Frontier released because its new Basic Economy fares will still incur fees (just like Basic Economy tickets purchased with American, Delta, and United).

This morning, I wrote about 17 routes that Spirit is cutting from its network. This is a regular change, but also one that could be part of a bigger plan within the airline. As US carriers have largely been profitable the past few years, it’s been interesting to watch the low-cost carriers struggle to get their footing. Travelers are looking for more luxe experiences and don’t want to feel nickel-and-dimed with fees. We’ll see what comes next.

Anthony’s Take: I love that Spirit is dropping change and cancellation fees. This makes traveling with the airline even more convenient as I can now change dates without worrying about costly fees being tacked on.
