Alaska Airlines is bringing back hot meals for purchase in its Main Cabin. Starting today, flights over 1,100 miles will be able to pre-order up to five chef-curated menu items.

Menus will vary by route and most flights (those over 1,100 miles and excluding redeyes) will see five different options including one hot choice. Here are some of the new dishes:

  • Carnitas Breakfast Bowl: Slow-roasted pull pork and salsa verde, with a side of breakfast potatoes and fresh scrambled eggs. This will be available on eastbound flights and to Hawaii (breakfast departures)
  • Monte Cristo Breakfast Sandwich: Smoked turkey breast, sliced ham & Swiss cheese served on a square croissant bun with cream cheese & raspberry jam. This will be available on westbound flights and from Hawaii (breakfast departures)
  • Panang Curry Chicken: Red coconut curry with grilled chicken breast and jasmine rice. Topped with edamame beans, sweet red peppers and onions. This will be available on eastbound flights and to Hawaii (lunch/dinner departures)
  • Pretzel Roll Sliders with Chips: Two Angus beef patties on KING’S HAWAIIAN® Original Sweet Pretzel Slider Buns with caramelized onions and Swiss cheese. Served with kettle-style chips. This will be available on westbound flights and from Hawaii (lunch/dinner departures)

All of these options sound delicious. They will all be exclusively sold by pre-order and not available to purchase if not ordered. Items range in price from $8 to $11.50. Passengers who pay with their Alaska Visa Signature® or Visa® Business card will receive 20% back as a statement credit. Pre-orders are available through the Alaska mobile app or through alaskaair.com from two weeks to 20 hours prior to departures.

Todd Traynor-Corey, Managing Director of Guest Products at Alaska Airlines, said:

We’re known for an inflight menu that is more thoughtfully curated with care. For a while now, our guests have often asked us if we’re ever going to bring back hot meals in the Main Cabin. It’s been difficult to keep it a secret – but for more than a year, our team has quietly worked behind the scenes taste testing the best hot food options with our culinary chef and creating a West Coast-inspired menu. Now no matter where they sit, guests will get to taste our world class food and beverages.”

With these changes, Alaska Airlines moves to the front of the pack in terms of buy-on-board offerings.

  • American Airlines has some options for flights over 1,300 miles, but these are snacks and not meals.
  • Delta Air Lines has food for purchase available on flights over 1,500 miles. It offers meals, but no hot options. I enjoy the Chicken Salad Sandwich Plate.
  • United Airlines is the best of these three with fresh options like the Classic Cheeseburger for sale on flights over 1,500 miles. I’ll often ask for food from Economy as United’s meals in First Class are still rather meh.

Anthony’s Take: Alaska Airlines jumped to first when it comes to offerings for purchase on its flights. I love the ability to pre-order and that there is food that is fresh, hot, and sounds delicious.
