If you’re wondering who is sitting up front on your next flight, you’ll find that gay men are almost twice as likely to buy First Class tickets according to a recent YouGov study on the demographics of the forward cabin. I know my husband and I follow this trend and have been buying F and J tickets for many years. It’s fascinating to see the overall profile that this study revealed.
Men in general make up the majority of First Class passengers (67%). Millennials make up the most represented generation up front with 38% buying premium (I would have guessed Baby Boomers). It’s no surprise that they’ll have higher incomes (200% of the median), but I was intrigued by the geography. California has the highest percentage of those buying First Class (20%), which fits into the West in general (33%). The Midwest sees 16% and the Northeast (15%). I would have also guessed that NYC would have skewed this result.
The study found that 8% of gay men booked First Class in the past 12 months compared to 4% of all heterosexuals, 2% of lesbians, and 3% of bisexuals. My guess is that fewer gay and lesbian couples (versus heterosexual couples) do not have children and therefore have higher disposable incomes.
Anthony’s Take: I’m not surprised by this study’s results. I know many gay men who fly up front. I think the geography and generation surprised me more.

Any insight as to why this might be? I thought it might be the DINKs thing, but queer women don’t fly up front nearly as much so that alone certainly isn’t the reason.
Not sure.
