Cheaphotels.org conducted a recent study and found that Jersey City, NJ is the second most expensive city for hotel stays. I used to live in Jersey City (and Hoboken for many years) and when visiting family in New Jersey have stayed at many of the hotels in Jersey City. Surprisingly, this survey found that hotel rooms here cost even more than New York City, which is just across the Hudson River.
Hotel rates were compared across 100 US destinations during October 2024 (the month when hotel prices in most American cities tend to be at their highest). The methodology included only centrally-located hotels with a three-star or higher rating. Boston came in first with the average rate per night around $320, but Jersey City was only $10 cheaper with the most affordable double room costing $310. New York City came in at $284 ($26 per night cheaper on average).
Recent Jersey City hotel stays for me have included the Hyatt House (full review here), the Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson, the Westin Jersey City Newport, and the Courtyard Jersey City Newport. I still prefer to stay at the W Hoboken (full review here), but the Westin Jersey City Newport is a good alternative.
The 10 most expensive cities in the United States for hotel stays include:
- Boston ($320)
- Jersey City ($310)
- New York City ($284)
- Raleigh ($258)
- Austin ($252)
- Detroit ($236)
- Boise ($236)
- Madison ($235)
- Nashville ($227)
- Durham ($226)
I’m amazed that San Francisco did not make the top 10. I can remember spending $500+ a night for hotels there in years past. Hotels there are averaging $105 per night this month. Whoa!
Anthony’s Take: I have found hotels in Jersey City to be pricey, but this survey surprised me. It will be interesting to see how the ranks change as people continue to return to offices across the country.
