Airlines oversell planes and have other issues where they need to get crew to another airport, but don’t have the seats. When that happens they look for volunteers to take alternate flights. If there are no volunteers, the offers can become staggering. We’ve seen passengers get up to $10,000 for minor inconveniences.
What’s great about the way that Delta handles bumps is that it offers access to a website where you can choose gift cards as compensation (including American Express cards, which are equal to cash). I’ve been in this situation and reaped Saks and Amex gift cards. Other airlines offer electronic travel certificates for the airline.
This was the case with a recent poster, @PM_ME_UR-KITTIES, on Reddit. Delta needed volunteers and offered $2,000. He took it, was given a hotel room, and accommodated the next day. His significant other was not happy with his windfall. In his words:
The flight looked like it was going to get canceled anyway. It did. So now I have $2,000 and a hotel stay but my fiancée is mad at me because I chose the money over coming home. But it looked like the flight was going to be canceled. Not to mention I called once and texted once to ask her opinion and she didn’t answer either so I had to make the decision by myself. She claims because she’s been in a semi depressed state the last few days it is crazy of me to ever make that decision.”
What’s even funnier about her getting angry is that the original flight ended up being cancelled. Therefore, he would not have made it home anyway. Instead, he now has $2,000. I would have taken the bump for this amount.
Anthony’s Take: My advice: run. If you’re with someone and they can’t understand the financial benefit of this situation and are blaming their mood on a “semi depressed. state,” do you really want to marry that person?
