WestJet announced a new interline partnership with Copa Airlines today. This will help make  travel seamless across North, Central, and South America. The agreement significantly expands opportunities for travelers by connecting WestJet’s growing network with Copa’s extensive route map throughout Latin America. While it’s not the codeshare agreement that Copa Airlines has with its fellow Star Alliance member airline, Air Canada, it is a way to make trips with connections across the carriers easier.

Through the partnership, WestJet passengers can now connect beyond Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport (PTY) to 37 destinations across Central and South America on Copa Airlines. Conversely, Copa customers traveling north will gain access to WestJet’s expansive network across Canada and the United States. Travelers will enjoy the convenience of:

  • Single-ticket itineraries covering both carriers
  • One-stop check-in for the entire journey
  • Through-checked baggage to their final destination

The partnership coincides with WestJet’s announcement of new nonstop service between Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport (PTY). When it launches on December 13th, the route will operate 4x weekly during the winter season. This new connection pairs WestJet’s global hub in Calgary with Copa Airlines’ hub in Panama City.

John Weatherill, WestJet’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, said:

Building on the announcement of our new direct service from Calgary to Panama City, this new interline partnership agreement will increase access to destinations across Central and South America for Canadian travelers. We remain focused on connecting guests to the world’s most popular sun and leisure destinations this winter, while also meeting the needs of business travelers by continuing to provide convenient access to some of South America’s largest markets.”

Anthony’s Take: It’s interesting to see Copa and WestJet get cozy. The Canadian airline has been forming all sorts of partnerships, but mostly with SkyTeam airlines.
