WestJet is expanding its international reach with new service to São Paulo/Guarulhos-Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU). This will mark the airline’s 100th destination served to/from its Calgary International Airport (YYC) hub and introduce the first-ever nonstop flights between Western Canada and South America. Beginning this fall, the carrier will operate the route 3x weekly with Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

The new route positions Calgary International Airport (YYC) as a gateway to the Southern Hemisphere, offering Western Canadian travelers direct access to Brazil’s business and cultural capital and onward connectivity across the continent. São Paulo serves as a strategic hub for LATAM Airlines Group, WestJet’s key partner in South America. Pending regulatory approvals, WestJet passengers will soon be able to seamlessly connect via São Paulo/Guarulhos-Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) to more than 30 destinations including Buenos Aires’ Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE), Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM),  Montevideo’s Carrasco/General Cesáreo L. Berisso International Airport (MVD), Rio de Janeiro/Galeão-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG, and Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL).

Beyond São Paulo’s cosmopolitan energy, vacationers will have easy access to Rio de Janeiro’s beaches and the wine regions surrounding Santiago. The route also carries significant commercial value. As the largest city in the Americas and a global economic center, São Paulo offers opportunities for business travel and cargo. The addition also complements WestJet’s broader Latin American partnerships, including a codeshare with Aeroméxico and an interline agreement with Copa Airlines. Both strengthen the carrier’s competitive position in the Americas and support Calgary’s emergence as a global aviation hub.

Anthony’s Take: WestJet continues to grow and 100 destinations from Calgary is pretty impressive. When the route launches in November, it will give Canadians another escape from the cold.
