Next Saturday, is the Army’s 250th birthday and President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. To celebrate, a military-style parade is scheduled for June 14th. This will include quite the spectacle with 150 helicopters, the Army’s Golden Knights parachuting onto the Ellipse, and the presentation of an American flag to President Trump. With all of this organized chaos, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) will see suspended flights for several hours due to an Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directive.

The parade begins at 6:00 PM and runs through 9:30 PM when fireworks are set to launch. All of this will cause significant delays, cancellations, and general disruptions. The FAA is forecasting that around 100 flights will be held at their departure airports with a limited number of departures allowed after 8:45 PM. This event is expected to cost north of $45 million and will include 6,600 soldiers and 150 military vehicles.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) is warning passengers of the potential impact of this event. It has a notice posted on the airport’s website and released a statement that reads:

To accommodate aircraft flyovers along the parade route, followed by a fireworks display, the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to suspend airline operations at DCA — affecting scheduled flights.”

Anthony’s Take: This military spectacle is based upon ego and a complete waste of money. I support our troops and think that they should be respected and honored for all of the sacrifices they make in serving this country. I do not support the underlying narcissism that is driving this event and the disruptions that it will cause.
