Marriott and MGM Resorts revealed plans in October to bring the W Hotels brand back to Las Vegas as part of the Mandalay Bay campus on the Strip. The hotel will occupy the space that formerly housed the Delano. This is not the first time that the W brand has operated in Las Vegas, but it is the first time that it has aligned with MGM Resorts.
The W Las Vegas was a hotel within a hotel in the SLS Las Vegas (which has also departed Sin City and become the Sahara). It operated from December 2016 through summer 2018 back when the brand was part of Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG). The new W Las Vegas will be part of the Mandalay Bay campus with all of the 1,117-suite tower under the W brand and it’s open as of today.
The W Las Vegas is the latest element of the partnership signed between Marriott and MGM Resorts. Details of the agreement were released in January of this year. This deal lets Marriott Bonvoy® members earn and redeem points at MGM’s 17 resorts and MGM Rewards™ earn and redeem for Marriott hotels. This deal replaced the Hyatt partnership that ended on September 30, 2023 (more here). Marriott Bonvoy® members do not receive matched status in the MGM Rewards program (like what used to be granted to World of Hyatt members), but those who hold status with MGM Rewards are given Marriott Bonvoy® status.
All members will be able to transfer points between Marriott Bonvoy® and MGM Rewards. Benefits for Marriott Bonvoy® members will only be available for stays booked directly with Marriott. With the addition of W Las Vegas, MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy® will encompass 12 destinations on the Las Vegas Strip, including Bellagio, a Luxury Collection Resort & Casino, ARIA Resort & Casino, Autograph Collection, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Autograph Collection, and Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, MGM Collection, and more.
Leeny Oberg, Marriott International Chief Financial Officer and EVP of Development, said:
We’re thrilled to continue working with MGM to bring W Las Vegas to the legendary Las Vegas Strip. This agreement is a pivotal moment in our collaboration, which continues to expand hospitality and entertainment offerings for guests. As a luxury brand rooted in bold design and nightlife, W Hotels is well-positioned to elevate experiences for travelers in this destination.”
Travis Lunn, President & COO of Mandalay Bay and Luxor, added:
W Las Vegas represents an exciting new chapter for MGM Resorts and for our guests seeking a new, sophisticated all-suite luxury experience on The Strip. W Hotels is a brand that is celebrated globally for their unique style and exceptional service, and we can’t wait to see the hotel come to life over the next couple of years, through its distinct personality, dynamic programming and elevated service culture.”
Reservations are open for stays starting today and room rates are great. This is an all-suite hotel and I’m seeing rates of $159 for tonight. Award redemptions are all over the map with rates between 15,000 and 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points per night.
Anthony’s Take: I am a fan of the W brand and used to like the Delano. I will definitely stay in the new W and check out what it has to offer in the future. Welcome back to Las Vegas, W.
