Marriott and MGM Resorts revealed plans today to bring the W Hotels brand back to Las Vegas as part of the Mandalay Bay campus on the Strip. This is not the first time that the W brand has operated in Las Vegas, but it is the first time that it has aligned with MGM Resorts.
The W Las Vegas was a hotel within a hotel in the SLS Las Vegas (which has also departed Sin City and become the Sahara). It operated from December 2016 through summer 2018 back when the brand was part of Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG). The new W Las Vegas will be part of the Mandalay Bay campus with a conversion of the Delano anticipated to begin later this year.
The W Las Vegas is the latest element of the partnership signed between Marriott and MGM Resorts. Details of the agreement were released in January of this year. This deal lets Marriott Bonvoy® members earn and redeem points at MGM’s 17 resorts and MGM Rewards™ earn and redeem for Marriott hotels. This deal replaced the Hyatt partnership that ended on September 30, 2023 (more here). Marriott Bonvoy® members do not receive matched status in the MGM Rewards program (like what used to be granted to World of Hyatt members), but those who hold status with MGM Rewards are given Marriott Bonvoy® status.
All members will be able to transfer points between Marriott Bonvoy® and MGM Rewards. Benefits for Marriott Bonvoy® members will only be available for stays booked directly with Marriott. With the addition of W Las Vegas, MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy® will encompass 12 destinations on the Las Vegas Strip, including Bellagio, a Luxury Collection Resort & Casino, ARIA Resort & Casino, Autograph Collection, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Autograph Collection, and Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, MGM Collection, and more.

Anthony’s Take: My husband reminded me that we had stayed at the old W Las Vegas. I did not remember the stay, but looking back I found that we had been guests. The W brand feels very Vegas and is a nice addition to the portfolio that is already open to Marriott Bonvoy® members (including two of my favorites Bellagio and The Cosmopolitan).
