Volaris is a low-cost Mexican carrier that holds 28% of the domestic market and flies several international routes. On Saturday, a surprising discovery caused the cancellation of flight VOI876.

The flight was scheduled between Mexico City’s Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez (MEX) and Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). As the crew was preparing to take off they found a man stowing away in the plane’s landing gear. The man apparently was able to jump over a fence and gain access to the airport undetected by security.

Ground crew notified the Airbus A320 captain and the plane stopped taxiing to the runway and returned to the gate. Airport authorities said that the man identified as “César N” put his own life and that of dozens of other people at the scene at risk. The flight was cancelled as a result.

Anthony’s Take: Luckily, the man was found before the plane took off. Even if he was not injured by the landing gear, he would not have fared well from the temperature and altitude of flying outside of the cabin.

All for a $100 flight. That flight isn’t too expensive. Why would he risk it for domestic travel within Mexico. Seems nuts.
