Many of the routes above are already served by American Airlines and United Airlines. Volaris entering these markets will most definitely add price pressure on airfare and possibly make the legacy carriers lower costs to compete. Mexico’s other low-cost carrier, Viva Aerobus, will likely respond with its own route additions as the two airlines often go head to head.
Volaris currently flies to these US cities (with Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) kicking off on July 2nd):
-
- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
- Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
- Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Miami International Airport (MIA)
- New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
- Oakland International Airport (OAK)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
- Portland International Airport (PDX)
- Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO)
- Sacramento International Airport (SMF)
- San Antonio International Airport (SAT)
- San José Mineta International Airport (SJC)
- Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
Anthony’s Take: I’ve never flown Volaris, but have seen the planes many times at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). I’m open to trying the airline if the schedule works for me and am interested to see what happens with the carrier entering United’s fortress hub in NJ.
