Three Virgin Australia flight attendants have been confined to their respective hotel rooms after a night of partying on a layover in Fiji went wrong. The carrier says a “serious security incident” occurred on New Year’s Eve and it’s working through investigating the alleged theft and sexual assault of two of the airline crew.
The three flight attendants spent the night clubbing in the Martintar, Nadi region of Fiji. Virgin Australia has dispatched its own team to investigate what occurred there. The families of the crew also traveled to Fiji and a replacement crew was brought in to work the return flight back to Australia.
Acting Police Commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, said:
We confirm police are investigating the Australian airline crew case as they were victims of theft of allegations of sexual assault after clubbing.”
Virgin Australia’s Chief Operating Officer, Stuart Aggs, added:
I’m sorry to advise of a serious security incident which affected a number of crew in Nadi, Fiji, on Tuesday evening. Our immediate priority is to look after the wellbeing of our crew involved and make sure they are supported. The safety and welfare of our people is our number one priority.”
No further details have been released as to what actually happened. It’s not clear if any arrests have been made, but authorities believe that locals are suspects according to The Daily Mail.
Anthony’s Take: Whatever happened sounds awful. It must be serious for Virgin Australia to bring its own team to Fiji to investigate and for the crewmembers’ families to also travel there.
