United Airlines is making connecting flights easier and less stressful thanks to the latest update to its award-winning mobile app. The airline’s app already blows away all others in the United States and it just keeps getting better. New enhancements give passengers real-time, personalized information to help them navigate their connections. The new tools offered in the app are an extension of United’s ConnectionSaver technology that is available now across all of United’s US hubs.

Key New Features in the United App

  • Turn-by-turn directions to the next gate with estimated walking times
  • Real-time flight status updates and boarding countdowns
  • Tips for navigating long layovers, including nearby United Club℠ access
  • ConnectionSaver alerts if the next flight is being held for the traveler
  • Automatic rebooking options in case of a missed connection

During a beta test this past spring, more than 350,000 travelers used the new tools with a 98% success rate in making their connections. The timing is ideal with more than 20 million passengers on connecting flights during summer 2025.

Personalized Connection Help for Every Traveler

The updated app provides tailored experiences depending on the connection. These include:

  • Comfortable Connections: Passengers get updates on gate numbers, layover tips, and walking directions
  • Tight Connections: The app delivers real-time alerts, boarding info, and notifies travelers if their next flight is being held (giving peace of mind and a time-saving edge).
  • Missed Connections: If a connection is missed, passengers receive instant rebooking options and may join the standby list for earlier flights (all within the app).

What’s Coming Next?

United plans to expand the app’s capabilities even further in the months ahead, with the addition of:

  • Support for more languages beyond the English and Spanish currently offered
  • Expanded location tracking, allowing the app to pinpoint the traveler’s current airport position for even more accurate directions
  • More personalized text message alerts (even for comfortable connections)

United’s app update is just one piece of a broader strategy to transform the travel experience with technology. Other additions include automatic rebooking and voucher distribution during delays or cancellations; real-time radar maps and weather updates powered by generative AI; Starlink Wi-Fi rolling out to all regional and mainline aircraft by the end of the year; AirTag support with Apple’s Share Item Location to better track checked baggage.

David Kinzelman, United’s Chief Customer Officer, said:

We know that giving people more information, in a transparent and easy-to-understand way, can help de-stress the connecting flight experience. Our award-winning mobile app is a game-changer during travel, and with these new features, our customers will have even more real-time details about their flight and as a result, have an even better experience flying United.”

Anthony’s Take: The United App continues to improve and put more power into the hands of passengers. It is by far my favorite airline app and I wish the others would catch up.
