Earlier today, I wrote about the crazy lines at New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). This is far from the only airport being impacted by the partial government shutdown as TSA workers go unpaid and many have called out. Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) has been particularly hard hit throughout the past few weeks. Passengers are spending hours in line, missing flights, and sleeping in the airport. United Airlines (the largest carrier in the airport) has come up with a solution for its top-tier elite members and those flying its Polaris® (international Business Class) and many are up in arms over it.
The checkpoint in Terminal C was closed down due to lack of staffing. United has reopened the security lines usually reserved for families and those with disabilities for its Premier 1K® and Global Services members as well as those flying Polaris®. Dedicated lines for those with elite status and credit cards are nothing new. People might be angry that this is being done, but I have no issue with it. You earn perks from being loyal to an airline or buying into the right cabin. That’s part of the appeal. If others cannot or do not do this, that’s up to them.

United is even letting qualified flyers know about the special lane. I wish other airports that are seeing similar issues would be able to open the same.
Anthony’s Take: As the lines in airports continue to snake around buildings and passengers are left waiting, United is doing something smart for its most valuable customers. While this might sound elitist, this is just good business. I’ve tried to think about how I would feel if I was not Premier 1K® and I think I would still agree that this is a good idea.
