United Airlines will increase its flights between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) to daily (from 3x weekly) between December 4th and February 15th. Lagos is one of five cities in Africa that United serves nonstop from the US.

The flights to/from Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) will be operated with Boeing 787-8 aircraft that offer 28 Polaris (Business Class), 21 Premium Plus, 36 Economy Plus, and 158 Economy Class seats. United used to fly to Lagos from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). This route ended in 2016 after demand driven by oil and energy sectors dropped. United had no service to Africa until 2019 when it began launching new routes.

Back in March, United announced that it was launching flights between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Marrakesh Menara Airport (RAK). This is United’s fifth destination in Africa. Others include:

  • Accra’s Kotoka International Airport (ACC)
  • Cape Town International Airport (CPT)
  • Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB)
  • Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS)

Oluwatomi Bola-Sadipe, United Country Sales Manager for Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, said:

Africa continues to be an integral part of United’s global network, and we are delighted to announce an increase of flights from Lagos to Washington Dulles during the winter season with our state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliner aircraft.”

Anthony’s Take: Demand for travel to Africa is growing both for leisure and business travelers. United is bumping up its offerings and currently offers the most destinations on the continent of any US carrier.
