United Airlines and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) announced this afternoon that a tentative agreement has been reached for the 28,000 flight attendants that United employs. The agreement still needs to be ratified, but this is a huge step in the right direction and comes after years of negotiations stalling. More than five years have gone into getting to this point and hopefully the tentative agreement will be finalized.

Final contract language will be over the next few days. The new agreement will then be subject to approval of the AFA’s Master Executive Council. Once approved, the tentative agreement will be put out for vote to have the flight attendants ratify it. If the vote carries it, flight attendants will see industry-leading pay (with raises as high as 40%), signing bonuses, and many other scheduling and quality of life improvements. The new contract would then be amendable in five years.

United CEO, Scott Kirby, said:

Our flight attendants are the best in the industry and have earned an industry-leading contract. I often say they are the face of our operation and the role they play every day – to keep people safe and deliver great service – helps make United the biggest and best airline in aviation history.”

This contract comes at a time when tensions have been boiling over. Several United flight attendants stormed a media event last week where United unveiled the new Polaris® seats and amenities. A meeting will take place on May 29th and May 30th to move this contract along.

Anthony’s Take: Congrats to all involved in getting this to an agreement that will hopefully be voted on soon.
