Last week, I wrote about my first Waymo ride in San Francisco and what a cool experience it was to ride in a driverless rideshare vehicle. Today, Uber and Waymo announced that they are partnering for autonomous vehicles (AV) to roll out on the Uber app in Austin, TX and soon in Atlanta, GA.
In Austin, Waymo rides will only be available via the Uber app. You’ll book a ride the same way that you do today, but must opt into using Waymo. Riders who request an UberX, Uber Green, Comfort, or Comfort Electric could be matched with a Waymo fully autonomous, all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicle (at no additional cost). If you don’t want this ride, you can opt out of it.
All of the Waymo features (unlocking the vehicle, opening the trunk, etc.) will be handled through the Uber app. Starting today, riders can travel across 37 square miles of Austin (from Hyde Park to Downtown to Montopolis). Uber and Waymo plan to expand in the future. Atlanta will be launched in the future, but no dates have been released.
Anthony’s Take: I love that Uber is partnering with Waymo. I use Uber almost daily and downloaded the Waymo app for San Francisco, but if I can just use Uber that is much easier. I hope this partnership extends to everywhere that Waymo is available and more cities are added soon.
